Jeff Martin, the Ahold USA Executive Vice President, suddenly resigned his position effective last Friday (June 8). The only details that have been released so far from the company include a statement from Martin indicating that after years of service to Ahold it was simply his time to retire. Martin has been known over the years as the “right hand man” to the CEO & COO of Ahold USA Carl Schlicker. Schlicker oversees all of the operations in the US including Ahold’s union banner where we work (Giant of Landover) and the non-union banner (Giant of Carlisle).
Martin was responsible primarily for merchandising and marketing. In April of this year, he received the “Marketer of the Year” award from the retail foods industry publication Supermarket News. All sources indicate that this change was completely unexpected. Suprisingly, no replacement has been named for Martin and Schlicker will serve in his place until someone is found to fill the vacancy.
We will update you as more information is forthcoming but we suspect that there may be something more to this story. Only time will tell and as usual, we’ll report on it as soon as we have more details.
